Intuitive Colour (there’s psychology in my palette)

Colour isn’t just pigment I pour onto canvas, it’s a master messenger. Every colour impacts the mind and body in its own way. Distinct tones have a silent way of expressing energy, sparking thought, and making you feel something - and there’s a good reason why. It’s called colour psychology.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOUR

Ever dropped into a deep state of relaxation while soaking in a cerulean blue seascape? Yep, me too! That’s colour psychology in action my friend. Everyday we’re subconsciously drawn to or repelled by different hues because their subtle energies stimulate a physiological and psychological change in our being. Sound woo-woo? It’s not. Just ask a scientist. Studies have shown short-wave length colours like blue decrease the heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. Which is why we feel peaceful in blue’s presence. Prefer a yogic perspective? When I was studying yoga I was curious to discover that blue controls the thyroid gland and sympathetic nervous system (that’s our body’s fight or flight centre). It’s also the colour of the throat and third eye chakras which, when in balance, promote peace of mind. Even psychologist Carl Jung recognised blue as the ancient archetype of vastness and freedom. Whatever way you look at it, the psychology of colour is powerful stuff right? No wonder artists, art therapists, interior decorators, branding specialists and graphic designers alike draw on it in their work.

A CRASH COURSE IN THE MEANING OF COLOUR

Honestly, colour psychology is a whole study in and of itself. And how you perceive colour can be determined by your personal experiences and culture. But here’s a brief rundown of what western colour theory says each colour means.

RED: Passion, love, strength
ORANGE: Excitement, enthusiasm, youth
YELLOW: Optimism, joy, warmth
GREEN: Healing, growth, harmony
BLUE: Calm, peace, tranquillity
PURPLE: Spirituality, wisdom, wealth
PINK: Romance, femininity, intuition
WHITE: Purity, innocence, clarity
BLACK: Sophistication, luxury, mourning

HOW I INTUITIVELY HARNESS COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY IN MY WORK

As an intuitive abstract artist, my paintings always begin as a flow of feelings. But as I work in silence, colour speaks. Sometimes it whispers experience. Other times it booms unexpressed thoughts. And every time it helps me paint the stories of my soul. Stroke by stroke, shade by shade, the palette chooses me – setting the stage for transformation. And somewhere between the start and finish of a piece I am changed. The right colours express what needs to be said. The right colours nourish. The right colours heal.

HOW YOU CAN USE COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY IN YOUR HOME

Colour is a great way to create meaningful and harmonious spaces in your home – whether you’re choosing wall paint, furniture, homewares or artwork. And because it has such an intimate impact on our being, choosing colours you genuinely love is the best place to start. But drawing on some colour psychology can take your interior styling and space making to the next level. So the next time your home or office needs a little revamp - take some time to think about how you want to feel in the room before you shop my collection {link to collection page}. What emotions do you want to evoke? What colour do you need in your life? Colour has power. How will you use it?
